Response: Demography affects spawning location in Northeast Arctic cod, but what affects demography?

چکیده

In a letter to the editor, Sundby (2015) expresses concerns about our study of changing spawning locations of the Northeast Arctic (NEA) stock of Atlantic cod over the period 1866–1969, where we identified statistically significant effects of the stock’s demography whereas various climate indices all fell below statistical significance. Our conclusion on the role ascribed to climate disagrees with that of Sundby & Nakken (2008), which, based on a subset of our data and without considering demography, concluded that spawning was shifted northwards in warm periods. Sundby’s (2015) criticism boils down to four points that we will address in turn.

Long-term change in a behavioural trait: truncated spawning distribution and demography in Northeast Arctic cod

Harvesting may be a potent driver of demographic change and contemporary evolution, which both may have great impacts on animal populations. Research has focused on changes in phenotypic traits that are easily quantifiable and for which time series exist, such as size, age, sex, or gonad size, whereas potential changes in behavioural traits have been under-studied. Here, we analyse potential dr...

Fisheries change spawning ground distribution of northeast Arctic cod.

Prior to the 1920s, the northeast Arctic (NA) cod were caught at spawning grounds ranging from the southernmost to the northernmost parts of the Norwegian coast, but have for the last 50 yr mainly been caught around the Lofoten archipelago and northwards. The NA cod have their feeding and nursery grounds in the Barents Sea, and migrate south towards the Norwegian coast in the winter to spawn. T...

Parental migration, climate and thermal exposure of larvae: spawning in southern regions gives Northeast Arctic cod a warm start

Temporal variability in environmental conditions met by early life stages is considered a key driver of fluctuations in recruitment and abundance of fish stocks. Variability in spawning grounds selected by the parental population can change the environmental conditions encountered by the offspring, with consequences for recruitment. We compared how changes in spawning ground distribution and in...

The Northeast Greenland Shelf as a Potential Habitat for the Northeast Arctic Cod

Observations (1978–1991) of distributions of pelagic juvenile Northeast Arctic cod (Gadus morhua L.) show that up to 1/3 of the year class are dispersed off the continental shelf and into the deep Norwegian Sea while on the way from the spring-spawning areas along the Norwegian coast to the autumn-settlement areas in the Barents Sea. The fate of this variable fraction of pelagic juveniles off-s...

Relationships Between Spawning Ground Identity, Latitude and Early Life Thermal Exposure in Northeast Arctic Cod

The Northeast Arctic cod (Gadus morhua), is well known for extensive upstream migrations from its feeding grounds in the Barents Sea to various spawning banks along the Norwegian coast. Prior to the 1990s these banks were located on a wide latitudinal range from Finnmark (~71o N) to Møre (~63o N), or even to the south-western parts of Norway (~60o N), with the highest densities around Lofoten (...
